Sion Airport Spotting Guide

Sion Airport (IATA: SIR, ICAO: LSGS/LSMS), is located in the state of Valais neat the most well-known ski resort of Switzerland. The airport was mainly used by the Swiss Air Force but now due to the coast reduction of the army, the Air Force is leaving the base at the end of this year 2017. Sion will be used by civil aviation only from 2018, acting only as alternate airfield for the Swiss Air Force. The traffic is mainly concentrated on business jets from a Pilatus PC12 up to a BBJ1 & BBJ2 or ACJ 319/320. You will be able to see some fighters mostly F5 Tigers but quiet often as well FA18 Hornets, Pilatus PC6/7/9/21 and helicopters EC635 & Super Puma from the Air Force. A completely new British airline company, PowdAir, will be based at Sion for next December 2017 and will potentially operates seven flights to England (Southend, Southampton, Bournemouth, Bristol, Manchester & Edinburgh), Belgium (Brussels) and Netherlands (Rotterdam) with apparently a Fokker 100.
