This report covers spotting locations from altiports and heliports worldwide.
|WHERE||Golden Bauhinia Square
From Wan Chai MTR station take exit A5 towards Immigration Tower. You will find a very long bridge. At the end of it take the staircase on your right, do not enter the buildings. Once you are at street level continue walking straight. Follow the curvature of the road. Once you’ll see the “Fleming Road sign”, you just have to continue along Flemming Road, you will have cost harbour road. Once you get to a major intersection cross it by continuing to walk straight, Follow expo Drive with eh Wan Chai exhibition centre on your left-hand side till you reach the Golden Bauhinia Square. From there you would see the sea, walk to the front and on your right, you’ll see the wan chai heliport. The spot is here, alongside the harbour.
Note: The whole Wan Chai North district is currently in renovation, so thing might change slightly but there are facilities for you to walk to the waterfront without waling on the road. It is not recommended going there via car but if you want to take a taxi (they are quite cheap) give him this address (Golden Bauhinia Square 金紫荆廣場, or just say Golden Bauhinia Square). Additionally, there are multiples bus stops around the location so it is a good idea having a look at your itinerary first.Public Observation Deck
Follow the same route from Wan Chai MTR station and then at this intersection, cross to the right and then towards the sea. Walk till you are on the waterfront and then head to the right, you will find a staircase, walk go to the last level, which is called “public observation deck” (the opening hours is from 7 am till 11 pm). Once you are on the last level, head towards the harbour of it and on your left is the heliport
|WHAT||Hong-Kong Government Flying Services Airbus H175.|
|TIME||Golden Bauhinia Square: On a sunny day form midday onwards, on a cloudy day every time. The season doesn’t have an impact. You can try shooting at night but it is hard to get a proper result with the conditions.
Observation Deck: From Sunrise till midday or in summer at dusk
|MISC.||The activity level at the heliport depends on the days, it used at least once a day, so you will need patience.
There are toilets really close to the spot, other than that you might have to go to the ferry pier to find a shop. Or you can decide to get back in Wan chai. The Harbour Centre can also be an alternative, you’ll find some restaurants there. There is shade at that spot and places sit.
Although spotting there is very easy, the view great, we highly recommend to be cautious with what kind of pictures you are taking. We recommend taking only the Helicopters when the doors are closed and not more! As to respect the privacy of everyone. If you go there you have to keep a low profile as we don’t want these spots to be closed.
|FOCAL LENGTH||For chopper on the pad a 100mm will allow the rotor blade to just fit in the frame.
You are really close to them and if their approach path is correct you can have some rainbows over with the downwash over the sea.

|WHERE||Paris Heliport Issy-les-Moulineaux (JDP/LFPI) is Paris’ main helicopter airfield. Thereby it hosts a big variety of aircraft, types and colors – from a Securite Civil base to flight school helicopters, private aircraft and medical helicopters. The small field can be found southwest of the city’s centre and isn’t that big actually, so it only provides space for 4-5 companies. While the west can’t be approached/accessed without permission, it is easy to shoot from along street and the fence in the north and from a park in the east – that’s why, you have these two options at this single spot:
|WHAT||You can actually overlook the whole airfield from both options. From Securite civile, to medical apron – from Helipass to flight school apron up to the “arrival/departure” path.|
|TIME||Best in the morning till early noon.|
|MISC.||No ladder, step needed as you can shoot thru the fence (at option 1) or above it by standing on the small concrete podest (at option 2).
Heat haze might be a problem on hot days. Be aware not too take pictures of (de)boarding medical helicopters.
|FOCAL LENGTH||Totally depends on the helicopter’s position: 100-600mm
Option 1 – parked grey helicopter = 290mm
Option 2 – Securite Civil helicopter = 400mm
As mentioned above in the decription, there are two options from where you can shoot here at JDP.
Option 1 – the fence in the north:
|WHERE||Located at the entrance of Zermatt at 10 minutes walk from the train station on the street named “Spissstrasse 107”. You can’t missed the entrance as you will notice the large Air Zermatt publication (see overview below). You will have to take a lift which will bring you on the ramp of the helipads.|
|WHAT||All movements of Air Zermatt and if you are lucky some other helicopters but those are extremely rare.|
|TIME||As it is located in a valley which is pretty narrow, in Winter you can spot from 0930 until 1500 and Summer almost the same. Best time to be here is Winter.|
|MISC.||The best moment is to come in the morning of Winter while the helicopters take all skiers to the ski stations, it’s a busy up and down run. Toilets are available inside the Air Zermatt office otherwise bring what you need (foods/drinks).|
|FOCAL LENGTH||All those shots have been taken between 30mm up to 300mm.|
