Malmö Airport (MMX/ESMS) is a small airport located 24km east of the city Malmö and handeld over 2.2 million passengers in 2016. Malmö is well known for it’s maintenance hangar especially for the aircraft type Fokker 50. You might be lucky and catch one of the F50’s of Amapola Flyg. Somtimes bigger freighter aircrafts like Antonov An124 or Boeing 747 visit MMX but the normal traffic consists of Fly Bra RJ100, RJ85’s and smaller aircrafts like Wizzar A320’s and SAS CRJ900’s.

TIME

This spot is worth a visit. When you walk to spot 5 you need to walk by here anyway. It is near the Sturup Raceway and around 2km by feet from the terminal. By car follow the signs to the raceway, pass the entrance and take the next left into a farm road and drive till the crash gate to the fire training area. Don’t block the entrance!
WHAT
Parked BAe ATP’s One MD82 is left (May 2022). If you want to get a better view over the whole apron you can climb on a deerstand nearby.
TIME
The whole day. Depends on the angle of the parked aircraft.
Just a few hundred meters from spot 4. Just continue along the perimeter by foot until you reach the approach. You can either climb on a deerstand nearby or you can use a ladder to shoot over the fence.
WHAT
All operations on runway 35 and most of the operations on runway 17 also the taxiway.
Around 1km by feet north of the terminal. Just follow the Bramstorpsvägen street and park as marked on the map. Now walk along the perimeter fence until the runway/taxiway and then you can either go on the hill or stay below to shoot over the fence with a ladder.

From afternoon until sunset all year round.

Spot #7 – Hill – Runway 17 Morning
WHERE
On the other side of the airport. You can walk from the pervious spot 6 on the dirt/gravel road along the perimeter to the other side of the airport. By car use the path as marked on the map if coming from the terminal. Drive on the farm road below the approach path and park the car as marked on the map or at the north/east corner of the perimteter if the road conditions are not the best. Then you need to walk all the way down to the little hill on the flield. You can also use a ladder to shoot over the fence.
WHAT
All runway 17 arrivals and depatures. Also runway 35 departures.
TIME
From sunrise until noon all year round.
MISC.
Nothing nearby
FOCAL LENGTH
70-300mm
As we didn’t visit this spot ourselves yet, we can only refer to THIS example shot.
Spot #8 – Long Term Parking – Ramp
WHERE
The spot is along the footpath on the long term parking lot, north of the terminal. At the bottom of that spot the airport fence goes down a slope and there is a smaller handrail there with a top handle and middle reinforcement. If you stand on the reinforcement while leaning against the top handle you can shoot over the fence. The fence is also not (that) high, so if you have a small ladder or have a camera with an adjustable screen it is very possible to shoot over the fence.
WHAT
All operations and standing aircrafts on the north side of the apron. Several of the daily ARN flights of BRA go to gate 1 or 3 nearest to the spot so that might negate the haze. Most of the time one of Zimex’s ATRs is photographable while waiting on its return flight to ARN in the evening.
TIME
It is a good spot from the afternoon until sunset. Heat haze might be an issue in summer,
MISC.
There are restrooms and restaurants in the nearby terminal.
Hi! I have one spot to add. 55°32’28.6″N 13°21’50.6″E until 55°32’33.1″N 13°21’50.9″E along the airport fence. At the first point of that spot the airport fence goes down a slope and there is a smaller handrail there with a top handle and middle reinforcement. If you stand on the reinforcement while leaning against the top handle you can shoot over the fence. The fence is also not (that) high, so if you have a small ladder or have a camera with an adjustable screen it is very possible to shoot over the fence. I have done this several times and have never been questioned or stopped by airport security. As said before, heathaze might be an issue in summer, but several of the daily ARN flights of BRA go to gate 1 or 3 nearest to the spot so that might negate the haze. Most of the time one of Zimex’s ATRs is photographable while waiting on its return flight to ARN in the evening. It is a good spot from the afternoon until sunset. Hope this is helpful for some people 🙂
