Genève Intl. Airport – Spotting Guide

Published by Jeremy at August 11, 2014 - last modified on May 15, 2022

Geneva International Airport (GVA/LSGG) is located 4km north west of the city centre and it’s the second biggest airport in Switzerland in terms of traffic and size after Zürich Airport. More than 40% of air traffic in Geneva airport is linked to the activities of the airline easyJet Switzerland. GVA has two passengers terminals T1 and T2. T1 is using every time but the T2 is mostly used during the winter charter season. The passenger traffic is growing steadily since 2002. More than 16 million passengers flew at Geneva in 2016. To get to the city centre, the train is the fastest alternative. On average, 5 trains run every hour from the airport station to Cornavin (Geneva city). It takes you only 7 minutes.

The strength of Geneva Airport is without a doubt the business and governments jets traffic. Geneva is a well-known city for lots of political meetings, international organisation, human rights, business, banks and peaceful place. So you can’t be disappointed about business jets traffic as it runs up every time. Government jets are more tricky as we know only at the last minute when they are coming. The Middle East are the most regular visitors with all types.

Geneva doesn’t have a real interesting civilian traffics, it’s less than some major airport and some usual aircraft type that you see everywhere in Europe. Even for the international flights, nothing is special as we only have Air Canada 333, Air China 332, Emirates 2x 77W, Ethiopian 788/789/772/773, Etihad 789, Qatar 359, Swiss 333, United 763 & 764. Air Mauritius during Winter with a mixed of 339/343/359.

P48 (BUSINESS JETS LONG-TERM PARKING)

WHERE By bus: Take the bus from the airport. Get on bus 28 (direction Jardin-Botannique) or Y (direction Ferney-Voltaire). It will take you 7 minutes and stop at Tunnel Routier. Then about 5 minutes by walk. From the stop Tunnel Routier you will see the tails of aircraft.

WHAT Since May 2019, the P48 has released a brand new layout. The parking can now see all types, from the smallest one to the 747-800 and even the 380. However, sadly for us, they have built a large/tall wall which suround the airport so we definetly recommand to carry a big ladder. Fortunetly, you can still take pictures at some places. Please note also that the aircraft will sadly be park towards the exit. Which means the tail will face the wall and the nose will face the Jura Moutain.
TIME In summer, the best is the morning from 08:00 to 13:00 but you can also come at 15:00 depend by the position of the aircraft. In winter from 09:00-12:00 and also at 14:00.

The Terrasse Panoramique is simply superb. ONly its opening schedule during winter could be improved… but this may come. Thank you, dear Geneva Airport and thank you, Mr. CEO Scheinder!

Hi,

Re. location 3 on the roof of Palexpo, a bit further to the left from where you see a person standing in front of the fence in this guide, they made a small camera hole. It is not ideal for photography, also because of objects on the apron. But it may provide an opportunity for the occasional good picture if you are lucky.

In addition, spot 5 has been closed by a small fence now. One can easily climb over it. However, to prevent problems. one can also walk alongside this small parking / construction-site on the Voie des Traz and then climb up the small hill where one would stand before, but this time in front of the fence.

Hello, I wonder about place number 5.
It is written that a ladder is necessary, what type of ladder did you use to obtain the proposed photos ? (approximate height)
In addition, on google maps, I see a closed portal blocking access to the place. Does this portal still exist? Can the place be inaccessible at times?
Thank you

Hi Simon!

Sadly the Vampire, Mirage and the Piper Cherokee are gone since many years already. The grass runway has been closed since a few years as well.

Thank you for your comment and all the best 🙂

Observations and comments after our trip to GVA on Friday June 15 and Saturday June 16, 2018.

Spot #8 – The Bridge
The bridge is very far from where the planes land or takeoff. However, the real problem is that the aircraft is visible for 1 or 2 seconds given the very narrow space of view between the buildings. Definitely not a good spot.

Spot #9 – TAG Aviation
The TAG Aviation parking is a PRIVATE parking and you cannot park there. We parked in the COOP shopping center and walked across the pedestrian bridge to the TAG Aviation parking. The COOP parking is free all day on Saturdays.
In the TAG aviation parking you can photograph planes as they taxi towards the runway and as they align on RWY05 for takeoff. The fence has some rather small openings for photography. If you have a big lens, (Nikon 80-400 or Canon 100-400) the lens does not fit in those openings and you will get a piece of the fence in the photo, unless you shoot completely perpendicular to the opening.
Landings on RWY05 are far better than SPOT#8 The Bridge, but the planes appear from behind the trees and you have time for 5 or 6 photos before the fence obstructs the view. Once a few planes land, you get the hang of it and it will become easier.

Spot #11 – Restaurant “Le Garoco”
This is no doubt a good spot for landings RWY05 – there are some obstructions on the roof of the restaurant. However, trees obstruct the view towards the runway and you cannot see aircraft aligning for takeoff on RWY05.

Hi Alberto!

Thanks, information added.
Angle and view aren’t perfect at spot #8, but the background is nice, that’s why we didn’t delete the spot.

According to the description in the above guide I could not find the exact locations of those two places.
I would be grateful if you could help me.

I tried the spot #4 this afternoon and i confirm the spot is now restricted. Fences everywhere, no access to the hill anymore. You can stay just in front of the closed gate but you only can park a 2 wheeler.
