ZRH-Spot 1
Zurich International Airport (ZRH / LSZH) is located 13 km north of Zurich City and is one of the spotter friendliest airports worldwide, with many official viewing areas and even two visitor terraces. The center of Zurich (train station Zurich HB) is easily accessible from the airport station. Count between 9 and 13 minutes depending on whether you take a train or the S-Bahn. The rest of Switzerland is well connected by trains, for example, ZRH-GVA takes 3 hours and ZRH-BRN 1 hour and half. It serves as a hub to Swiss International Air Lines, Helvetic and Edelweiss. Since the acquisition of Swiss by Lufthansa, it is the third largest hub of the latter. In 2019 ZRH greeted over 31mio. passengers with at lest of 275k flight movements.
The airport has three airside piers, which are known as terminals A, B and E (also signposted as Gates A, B/C and E). A central air-side building called Airside Center, built in 2003, is directly linked to terminals A and B, which take the form of finger piers. ZRH has three runways: 16/34 of 3,700 m (12,100 ft) in length, 14/32 of 3,300 m (10,800 ft) in length, and 10/28 of 2,500 m (8,200 ft) in length. For most of the day and in most conditions, runway 14 is used for landings and runways 16 and 28 are used for takeoffs, although different patterns are used early morning and in the evenings.
If you are interested in an apron bus tour, which even stops at the intersection of the runways, please visit the official website.

MISC. | Restaurant and toilets are available in the terminal. |
FOCAL LENGTH | 20mm – 400mm |
WHERE | Will reopen on June 14 2023!
The Observation Deck on Dock E is only accessible to visitors (not passengers) via a shuttle bus from from Observation Deck B. Follow the way to Spot #1. The shuttle bus operates every 30 minutes and begins at 12:15 with last departure at 15:15. If you are a passenger with a valid boarding pass flying from Terminal E, you can use a separate deck after security checks. It is open all year round and is located next to Dock E in the passenger zone following the security checks. |
WHAT | Departing rwy16 and rwy28, taxiing to rwy16. |
TIME | As you can photograph different angels usually you can stay here the whole day. |
MISC. | Vending machines for snacks, drinks (warm and cold) and toilets |
FOCAL LENGTH | 100mm – 200mm |
WHERE | From inside the airport, you’ll find elevators to the Car Park P3 in the rearmost corner of the food court, near the train station. Follow the signs to the uppermost floor. Its a little bit tricky to shoot from here because there is a mesh (to prevent birds to fly into the garage) but there are some holes. If you stay on the penultimate floor there is no mesh. |
WHAT | Runway 34 Arrivals and departures, taxiing, parked and maintenanced aircraft – so basically a very nice overview of the surrounding area/the southern part of ZRH airfield. In addition even heavy 16 departures are very nice here. |
TIME | Due to the sun´s position the light is okay between spring and autumn only and then also just from sunrise till late morning/early noon. |
MISC. | Lots of shops, restaurants and toilets are available inside the Terminal. Heat haze is a problem here as well as the poles in front of the mesh. Don´t cut holes into the mesh! |
FOCAL LENGTH | 50mm – 400mm B777 arrival 34 with mountains = 300mm / B764 side shot = 150mm / A333 on taxiway = 115mm / A333 on whiskey stands (other site of the runway) = 350mm |
WHERE | By walk, exit terminal 1 to the east (possible on both, arrival or departure level) and proceed straight ahead to the Parking Garage P6. Enter the large parking garage you and get to the 10th or 11th floor by car or elevator. The difference is as follow: A: 11th floor. This is the rooftop of the garage and you have a wonderful sight of the northern part of the airport. What you cannot see as the sight is blocked by a building is the line up/threshold for 28 so go to B instead. B: 10th floor: Taking pictures is a bit tricky as you have to shot trough some metal rods, which are wide enough. So go to the eastern corner to photograph the line-up of 28. |
WHAT | Arriving and departing from rwy28 and the taxiway to 28. 10 departures as well but those are rare. |
TIME | In winter the spot is good for the whole day. In the summer month there can be a lot of heat haze during midday. Summer straight on taxiway/runway from: 09:30 – 16:30 Summer lineup on 28: 10:30 – sunset |
MISC. | Shops an Restaurants are available in the terminal. Restrooms within the parking garage on the main floor. |

MISC. | Nothing at this spot so bring with you what you need. It is a private area, so we kindly ask you to be very respectful. |
FOCAL LENGTH | B738 = 500mm / 763 = 380MM / 744 & 380 = 340mm / Depends on the angel that you want but a minimum of a 400mm is required. |
WHERE | From spot 7, drive on Zürichstrasse direction south for about a minute and takethe third way on the right named “Winklerallmändgraben”. Park your car along the way next to the bridge. Its a offical parking and you need a parking disc. Now cross the bridge over the 51 and walk for about 10 minutes down to the fence. Now you can either stay at the crash gate, but the fence is almost 3 meters high there. Or walk a bit further down the path where the path is elevated and you can easily shot over the fence with your ladder. |
WHAT | Excellent point for arrivals/touchdown on runway 14. For side on photos of heavies (see Delta 767) you have parts of the fence in your picture. |
TIME | Summer from 07:00 to 11:00 No light in during the winter! |

WHERE | The parking at the end of rwy16 is located next to the SRTechnics apron. A ladder is highly recommended – with a little luck, shooting through the fence is possible, too. |
WHAT | You may be able to get a shot if a maintenance visitor is parked the right way. Mostly home airlines for maintenance. Air Caraibes is a normal visitor for maintenance, Qatar Amiri as well for the big checks, and some other AIrlines too. |

MISC. | Nothing at this spot, bring with you what you need. |
FOCAL LENGTH | 50-200mm |
WHERE | By car, from the Park Inn Hotel take on the right, direction north then take the first exit also on your right and continue strait until the end of the road. You will see the Heligrill place. Please park your car along the road. Parking disk is needed and police patrol regular.
UPDATE JUNE 2023: The expansion of the apron in front of the grill has began and situation can change daily. The viewing platform as well as the heli-grill will be relocated closure to runways intersection however do not expect to have a large viewing platform as before (it seems based on the plans). |
WHAT | Taking off rwy16 and 28, taxiing to rwy10 (rare) and south apron as well as remote places. It’s a great spot with lot of facilities and a wonderful view over the airport. A few holes along the fences are available in order to get pictures of the new remote apron. However, during summer time you might get some heat haze as you are more fare away than before from the runways. As well, if some aircraft are park in front of you it might be a problem to get departures shots on runways. The remote place is mostly use for government aircraft up to an Airbus 340-600. In total 7 holes can be found in the fences (see overview pictures). |

Thanks a lot.

Nice to hear that. Thanks for the update Tom.

Looking for a picture of the Emirates A380 landing in ZRH on March 5th, 2023.
Thanks,
Andreas
It appears that’s it’s no longer possible to use “Spotter” in the app or on the website. If I enter it, the app produces no results. Same goes for the website
Indeed, looks like this function is no longer supported. Too bad!
-Julian
2022 Nov 27. For spot fourteen (14) it is again possible to photograph the lines up in good conditions. The trees that made photography impossible until this summer have been cut down and the view is clear again.
Good news, except for the trees 😀
Thanks, Julian
Hello, if anyone has ever visited AL RAUSHE I would love to know what it is like with heat haze and transport and other useful information. Thanks!
Observation deck in Terminal E was open last week (Jan 2022).
Are you sure? The website claims it is closed.
I think you mean the part at deck E for passengers with a valid boarding pass. This is open.
Yes sorry – didn’t realise there’s two. Delete my comments.
I have added the missing second deck in the guide because of your comment so all fine 🙂
-Julian
You should put P2 on there. It’s a very nice alternative when the Observation Deck B is closed. Also sometimes big jets use the first gate and block the view on the Observation Deck, in which case the elevation and different angle eliminates those issues.
Hi,
do you recommend taking a tour to the runway intersection? What focal length do you recommend there?
– Antoni
I would highly recommend it! I used between 25mm (A340/B787) and 100mm (A220 early rotation)
