Luxembourg Findel Airport – Spotting Guide

Luxembourg Airport is situated 6 kilometres east of the city of Letzebuerg, the capital of Europe’s 7th smallest state by size and population. Luxembourg is not only the home of many istitutions of European Union like the European Court of Auditors and the Court of Justice, but also of Luxair and Cargolux. They operate from the country’s single international and paved landing strip – called Luxembourg Findel Airport.
Despite the country is surrounded by the majors in Europe like France and Germany, Luxemburg absolutely muscles in with the big one because the airport is one of the busiest in terms of freight business in West Europe! Jumbo jets are floating in here daily, wouldn’t have believed that, huuh? The airport startet early! In the 1930s years the airstrip was primarily serving the city of Sandweiler. With only a short grass runway of 1000m, the airport was used by the Luxembourger until the Germans based a fighter unit here in 1940. Until 1944, the airport was completely under German Control, but in September 1944, the United States Army joined and took over control after having banished the Germans literally. After WWII, the airport was again in Luxembourgish hands after the Americans have returned authority back to the small state.
Due to its important part in the European Union, the airport has shuttles to several European capitals and metropolises e.g. Paris (AF), Vienna (OS), Zurich (LX), Copenhagen (SK), or Berlin (LH).
Cargo operations are another main pillar for LUX with Cargolux having a hub there and operating flights to all over the world with their 747 freighters. Etihad Cargo, Qatar Cargo, Atlas Air and China Airlines Cargo are frequent visitors too. Keep in mind you can´t rely on the schedule times for these cargo flights on flightradar or flightstats as they usually never on time and there are always flights that are not listed.

| Ladder | No longer needed at most positions as the airport authorities installed photo holes (see description for each spot). A new rule applies as of December 2024 and you have to stay 3 meters away from the fence in the case you use a ladder. |
| Car/Public Transport | Very advisable as the spots, especially on the south, are not to be reached so easy and quick by public transport but it is possible anyway. Timetable of the bus can be found here. |

| Season | The traffic at Luxembourg Airport slightly increases during the summer season while Luxair operations a few holiday charters but the regular flights within Europe are steadily the same throughout the year. Also the freight sector does not show any significant changes during the year. |

Forest (Schëtterhaard) - 24 arrivals & departures
| WHERE | This spot is located in the forest Schëtterhaard south of the airport’s runway. If you travel from the airport’s terminal, drive northbound to A1 towards Trier / Grevenmacher and exit the highway after about 700m again (Exit 10 – Cargo Center). When you vacate the highway you will enter a roundabout (spot 2). Take the second exit (Rue de Senningen to Naihaischen). Follow this street for about 1km until a parking bay appears on the right hand side of the street in the forrest. Park your car here and walk through the forest for about 200m as it is shown on the map above.
Travelling to this spot on public transportation is possible if you take the bus 361 from the terminal and go out of the bus at “Cargocenter”. Then walk for 10 minutes the same road as described above and as soon as the airport fence breaks off to the right just follow it and one reaches the spots. No need to walk to the parking lot. |

Crash Gate - 24 arrivals & departures
| WHERE | This spot is located near the Freight Centre next to highway A1. If you travel from the airport’s terminal, drive northbound to A1 towards Trier / Grevenmacher and exit the highway after about 700m again (Exit 10 – Cargo Center). When you vacate the highway you will enter a roundabout. Take the second exit (Rue de Senningen to Naihaischen). The spot will be immediately after the second exit on the right hand side of Rue de Senningen at the crash gate. Parking is not allowed directly at this location and security will send you away if you do so. We recommend to park next to spot 8 and walk back along the road. |
| WHAT | All arrivals into runway 24 as well as departures from runway 24, but the view on the runway is limited, due to a second fence. Taxiway photos are no longer possible. |

| MISC | There is nothing nearby to this spotting location so bring everything that you need by yourself. No ladder needed as the lens fits easily through the gate. |

Administration of Air Navigation - 24 and taxiway
| WHERE | You can get to the spot by using the airport Road. When you come to the junction with traffic lights (Rue des Trèves / Rue de Neudorf) drive the ramp towards the parking lot. The location is hidden in the rear left corner of the big parking lot. After going through the hedge you’ll find four photo holes in the fence (on two hights). |
| WHAT | Good for traffic on 24 and taxiway traffic. In the summer grass might be too high and will |

| MISC. | Some free parking slots available. Be aware of reserved ones (e.g. Police). Use the address (6a Rue de Tréves) and not the marker in Google Maps. Otherwise the route will go over the airport grounds. In Summer, the grass is sometimes not cut, causing limitations of some angles right up to the cut of the gear of the airplanes (see samples below). |

Ibis Budget Hotel - 24 movements, apron
| WHERE | An Ibis Budget Hotel is located west of Terminal A (The terminal hall). Note: There are two Ibis Hotels, but you can only photograph from Ibis Budget Hotel. The other one is a standard Ibis Hotel. |
| WHAT | Runway 24 movements from the corridor of the 5th floor only. There are rooms (best one is 525) aligned to the airport which offer a good view onto the airport’s apron. |
| TIME | From mid-day until sunset, line-ups from late morning |
| MISC. | Your photographs must be taken through a glazed and tinted window. You can not fully open the window which is the case at many airport hotels or in high level buidings. You cannot travel here by local public transport. Parking in front of the hotel is free and not limited (for hotel guests only). If all spaces are occupied, there are enough parking possibilities nearby. We can recommend this hotel for clean rooms and for its low price. It is a good spotter hotel. Breakfast and food is offered but fee-based. |

Birelerhaff - 06/24 movements
| WHERE | This spot is located directly at the fence, near the small village ‘Birelerhaff’. If you travel from the airport’s terminal, drive northbound to A1 towards Trier / Grevenmacher and exit the highway after about 700m again (Exit 10 – Cargo Center). When you vacate the highway you will enter a roundabout. Take the second exit (Rue de Senningen to Naihaischen) and follow the street course for about 2 kilometer until you enter the town of Neihaischen. Turn right onto street CR185 (Rue Principale) to Sandweiler and follow the street course for another kilometer and turn right at the intersection to remain on CR185. Follow the street for 1km until the town of Birelerhaff is on your right. Turn right towards the village and follow the street. The street will snap off to the right but drive straight ahead until the end of the street. You can park your car at the bottom of the small hill but the farmer is not happy about that and may call the police. So we recommend to park next to some houses down the road and walk the 5 minutes to the location (see map). Public transport is possible by bus 411. Alight at bus stop “Sandweiler, Hiel” and follow “Rue Belle-Vue” northwards.

Staff Car park - 06 arrivals & departures
| WHERE | This is a known spot for the locals and you have different positions there to take your photos. You reach the spot by following the airport road from the terminal westwards to the A1. After a couple of minutes turn left at the signal and drive ahead to the staff car park on an unamed road. Parking is possible at the entry next to the farmers field (don`t block it) or curbside along the road if you stay next to your car. You can now walk to the parking lot to the photo holes at the fence or you stay where you have parked your car (arrivals only). |
| WHAT | From this spot you can take all movements for runway 06 ops. For taxiway photos go down to the installed photoholes, for arrivals you can stay at the road. |

Railroad track - 06 arrivals
| WHERE | The spot is situated within a forrest clearance and a railroad track. To get there from the airport road (spot 6) is pretty fast. Follow the signs to the Autobahn A1 and take the the third exit on the next roundabout to the N2. Drive left at the next junction and then third exit at the roundabout. There is a small parking lot where you can park. Now you have to walk over the railroad bridge and 300 meters along a forrest road. There is a gate which you can pass on the side. Your spot is next to the railroad track in a small clearance. |
| WHAT | You just see the 06 arrivals here. Keep in mind you have only 2 seconds to take your picture as the gap between the trees is very small. An alternative is to stay on the bridge but the angle there is not the best (see last sample photo). |

| MISC. | There is nothing nearby this spotting location. Please bring everythings along by yourself. Police is patroling regulary and looking for tickets. If you dont have a parking ticket, you will get a fine (24 euros). Pay days are from Monday to Friday (1 Euro for 5 Hours). Pay machine is at the beginning of the lot on the left side. |

Platform - 06 departures
| WHERE | There is one more spot just over the crash gate. A car is needed but you can also take the bus 361 at the terminal and go out of the bus at “Cargocenter”. If you come by car, instead of leaving the roundabout at the second exit, you exit it at the 4th direction Sennibgerberg, and then immediately after the bridge you drive right where you will find a little street, follow it and after around 30 meters you’ll find a little path. Just go up where you will find a little platform. |
| WHAT | Update July 2023: Due to the big trees only take offs from 06 are possible. 24 arrivals can’t be spotted anymore. |

| MISC. | The Platform is also only for 4-5 people. There are no amenities nearby. |

Cargolux Hangar - Ramp and Runway
| WHERE | This spot is located right next to the Cargolux Maintenance Facility. By car it is possible to drive to it. Use same direction as to #5 parking until you reach the crash gate and park your car there withouth blocking it. Be aware, it is a restricted road but we never had any trouble. Public transport is possible by bus 194. Alight at bus stop “Sandweiler, Hiel” and follow “Rue de la Chapelle” until the crash gate. |
| WHAT | Good to take pictures of parked a/c, mostly 747 of Cargolux. Landings and departures 24/06, although mostly landings 06. Ladder recommended for these options. 24 Departures only for heavies and heavy single aisle aircraft take offs. No ladder needs here. |
| TIME | Landings and departures 06, sunrise until noon. Departures 24, noon until 15h. Be aware of heat haze from this position! Parked a/c best from sunrise until 15h, but on late evening you still can have nice pictures then (see sample below). |

| WHERE | The Comptoir du Bon Pays Restaurant is located on the first floor of the airport, offering a nice view of the runway. It is landside and no boarding pass is needed |

Parking Lot G - All movements
| WHERE | Right outside of the terminal, on parking lot G, there are two photo holes in the fence where you can shot from. |

| TIME | Sun facing you almost all day. From the afternoon to the last light in the summer months. Maybe some side shots possible in the morning hours. |
| MISC. | Everything needed is available in the terminal. Possible that vegetation blocks the view partially. |

Observation Terrace - All movements
| WHERE | The spot as a brand new platform/terrasse situaded between the Terminal and the new Skypark. It’s outside of the terminal for the public and easily accessible by all transports that stops infront of the main terminal. It’s possible to take pics without ladder the glass fance is only about 1.20m. A ladder could offer a better view of the apron but is not needed. |
| WHAT | Spot is in the middle of the runway, so almost all movements like 24 and 06 departures, planes taxiing from and to 06 and parts of the apron of Terminal B Some lightpoles may influence your pics. |
| TIME | Sun facing you almost all day. From the afternoon to the last light in the summer months. Maybe some side shots possible in the morning hours. |
| MISC. | Everything you need is in the terminal nearby, bus stop one min away. |
| FOCAL LENGTH | Taxiway A320/738 = around 200mm |
American Cemetery - 24 departures
| WHERE | There is a cemetery for American soliders at the Val du Scheid. You can either spot from the parking lot or go inside the cemetery. There is a security guard at the entrance so tell them about your intention. |
| WHAT | Best for heavy departures on runway 24. Props and light jets are already too high at this point. There area trees in the way and you see the planes rotating very late. |
| TIME | From sunrise until mid-day/early afternoon. |
| MISC. | Definitely no problems with police, there are securitys going there everywhere and for them it was no problem. Toilets are there for the visitors |
| FOCAL LENGTH | 200-400mm |
Parking M - 06 arrivals & departures, taxiway
| WHERE | In 2025, two photoholes had been installed at the western end of Parking M. The parking is fee-based and needs a reservation but you can park your car behind the police station or at the General Aviation parking (see map). |
| WHAT | You can see landings on rwy 06, taxiway B4 and intersection Golf, or when rwy 24 is in use you may see some heavies or intersection takeoff’s rotating. With a small step you can choose your position closer to the intersection Golf. |
| TIME | Only in summertime, from the afternoon (16:30) until sunset. The taxiway B4 is very close so there might be less heat haze in general, but there is a risk for heat haze on the runway on hot days. In summer, high grass might cut of parts of the landing gear. |
| MISC. | There is a gas station 2 bus stops in direction of the terminal and a small rain-shelter at the parking. |
| FOCAL LENGTH | A350 on rwy 90mm; Dash8 on taxiway 60mm |
Tennis Club- 06 arrivals
| WHERE | This spot is near Tennis Club “Bonnevoi Asbl” and an alternative to spot 7, when you don’t want to walk this long and want some more pre-warning period. Once you are on Rue Anatole France and get out of town, the street splits into two. Take the left spike and drive pass the halls of the tennis club and then there is an open field to the left. You can park your car on the side of the street. You get there by car from the airport in approx. 20 mins, quicker from certain areas of LUX town. A bus stop “Anatole France” served by 2 lines (from the City Centre and from the Kirchberg area) is about 10mins away walking. |
| WHAT | Approach 06 only. Acft are quite high, but no problem with heat haze. The Dash 8-400 gave the best motive there. |
| TIME | From sunrise until mid-day/early afternoon. |
| MISC. | It is a quite residential area. No encounters with police, but very neat area. Therefore take all your trash with you, as it is anyhow expected everywhere in LUX. There is no fence and no ladder needed. |

Spotting Hill - 06 arrivals and departure
| WHERE | The well known hill is located between a concrete factory and the Luxair hangar, south of the airport. Access is from the south via the E29. |
| WHAT | Best for 06 arrivals and departures as well as 24 departures. |
| TIME | Due to the long distance to the runway it is only usable in the morning hours. After that massive heat haze appears. |
| MISC. | Nothing nearby. |
| FOCAL LENGTH | 777 = 200mm, 747 = 270mm |
Honestly 4/5 for photo location is so over evaluated. Ok it’s cool for the holes in the fence but there is too high.. and the hôtel Moxy is not repertoried although is THE best place to see the apron and runway.
New position available for as long as it gets. With Betons et Materiaux it gives a massive hill. From here you can shoot on the Cargolux maintenance platform. Most likely also on the 24 in the morning. Good alternative for spot 7 and 13. You shoot over a valley so probably less heat waves as well.
Spot 7 is pure belly shots from the bridge.

It is still there. A lot of construction is ongoing, but not directly there. 30m more to the west there is a big hole digged.
Dear spotterguide team. Please be advised that after a meeting with the airport authorities, it’s now expected to stay away from the fence 3 meters when using a ladder, it’s not possible anymore to use step ladders to spot from the between the fence and the top NATO wired fence. it’s expected now to use the spotter holes that have been placed around the airport.

There are two new locations of photo holes at Luxembourg Findel Airport. Two are installed at the fence next to the old Luxair Hangar (near to the Tower Spot) and another two in the fence of Parking M.

Just back from a short visit 19/20 August 2024.
I stayed at the IBIS Budget room 425 so directly below 525, most of the view is now blocked by the new Skypark development. The windows at the end of the corridor have a view straight out towards the runway but are very dirty.
There will be a new Moxy Hotel in the Skypark development at the end nearest to the terminal building (spot 12). It looks like there will be an open air terrace on the 4th floor facing the airport.
After security you can move freely around the Schengen departure gates, there are clear windows at the A gates (two floors down from spot 10). The link between A and B gates has windows facing the apron but these have solar film on them, there are some clear windows around the B gates looking towards the terminal building. The business lounge is one floor below spot 10 but the flat roof of the gate area blocks some of the view.
For spot 2, be advised it’s now strictly forbidden to park in front of the crash gates. New signs have been put on the fence
Hello everybody! I am bored, so I will update this guide to the best of my abilities. My name is David, I am a spotter here in Luxembourg. I live and work here 🙂
So, I’ll start with the basic information. Bus numbers have changed in July 2022 throughout the country. Around the airport here’s what counts: Bus 122 is now 361. There have been added two new bus lines. 223 Bonnevoie <-> Junglinster P+R via Airport and 850 Bertrange Belle Étoile <-> Airport via Walferdange
Spot 1: Nothing has changed here. But I would have a new spot. At the coordinates (49°38’09.1″N 6°14’30.3″E) you can take photos for 24 arrivals like this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/197422292@N05/53059598507/in/dateposted/
Spot 2: The parking area marked in the photo above is not available anymore. I have seen spotters park therefore in the front of the gate but this is strictly forbidden and the Airport security will come and demand you to leave since this is fire entrance.
Spot 3: Nothing has changed.
Spot 4: I cannot adress the hotel because since I live here I don’t stay there. That’s for you to decide. Only once a spotter told me that they don’t allow you to do it like it used to since there was a severe case of spotters abusing the hotel. But this is unconfirmed. Nevertheless; practice caution!

Spot 6: Nothing has changed. They are also pretty relaxed if you go on the parking lot as long as you don’t cross any barriers.

Spot 8: Trees are now a big handicap. You can still see the planes clearly but only with takeoffs on RWY06
Spot 9: Now there is a new construction site. Luxair is building a new hangar. It shouldn’t take more than until December. Spot 10: This spot is now completely useless. Since now there is the cunstruction of the new terminal building. If you really want to take photos into that direction go to the upstairs restaurant “le comptoir du pays” and buy something, sit next to the just slightly tinted windows and take your photos. Works best with bad weather imo.

Yes everything is fine. I would just recommend looking at the departure board of the bus stops with the Mobiliteit app. Because in July last year every bus line number changed. So for example 1xx numbers are now in the north and 6xx in the south etc. Just do a quick check. But for Sandweiler Hiel, from the central station, use 411 and from the Luxexpo use 455.

Lousy Place for spotting. The Photo-Holes, that should open the view to the planes are mostly behind Buildings and/or on places where you only see planes that are waiting to start. Bad place to see starts and landings… would be easy to open some views, but obviously there´s no interest in it…
The photo hole at spot 9 is no longer there. Also, the construction has finished.

The spotter hole is still there… exactly where the spot is marked on the map. Ladder still recommended as you get better views more to the right of the fence.
