Gothenburg Landvetter Airport is Sweden’s second-largest airport and serves western part of the country. It is located about 20 km east of Gothenburg and is operated by Swedavia. The airport has one main runway (03/21) and handles both domestic and international traffic. Most movements consist of narrow-body aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families and widebodies in winter. Airlines operating here include Scandinavian Airlines, Ryanair, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Lufthansa and KLM. Destinations mainly cover major European cities, domestic routes within Sweden, and seasonal holiday destinations. The airport opened in 1977 and has expanded over the years. Today, it focuses on increasing capacity while also aiming to reduce environmental impact through sustainable aviation initiatives.

| Season | During the Winter, photographing at ESGG could be challenging, when photographing at all spots at the west side of the runway are backlit from early November to the middle of February. The weather can vary from sunny to blizzard but is usually cloudy and cold. For plane spotting in winter we recommend to bring warm clothes. Summer is the best season for plane spotting as the weather is usually good with clear skies. Temperatures are between 15-25℃. |
| Security | For spotting at all location please call 010-109 36 01, press 1 and inform the guards and inform where you are. Sometimes the guards could drive by and ask you a couple of questions and remember that you need to follow their instructions. If they tell you that you need to leave the spotting place you are gonna need to follow that. It is not mandatory but it could be helpful to have bring a valid id such as passport or drivers license incase you are going to identify yourself. It almost never happens but it is just a recommendation |
| Runway Usage | |
| 03/21 | No preferred direction. Both being used for departures and arrivals |
| Spot #1- Hyddan – 21 arrivals and departures | |
|---|---|
| WHERE | The official spotting location is located north-east of the runway on a hill, beside the logistics centers. To get there follow road 40 towards Landvetter Airport and follow signs for the airport exit. When you have left the highway follow the signs towards the airport. Once you have driven past McDonald’s you will take the right exit towards Airport city. At the roundabout take the first exit to the right towards Airport city. Follow that road and then take the forth exit to the left. If you drive into a dead end you have driven to far. Once you have turned left at the fourth exit turn right and then continue straight ahead until you have passed the logisistic center. You can either park directly at the hill or next to the logistic centers as marked on the map.. |
| WHAT | Best for arrivals on 21 and planes taxiing on Y for lining up on 21. 03 departures are already too high. |
| TIME | Location is best in the morning especially in the winter but spotting in the summer works perfectly too. |
| MISC. | Don’t ever go under the approach lights or near the fence, if so you will get problems with the guards. No ladder needed as the location is elevated. A small open cabin offers sun protection and a bench to sit down. |
| FOCAL LENGTH | A319=170 mm; B738=110 mm |
| Spot #2 – Forrest – 21 line-ups and arrivals | |
|---|---|
| WHERE | Drive on Härrydavägen either west or east bound. Turn onto Kroksjöävgen and continue straight ahead. Cross the railroad tracks and then turn left and follow Kroksjövägen and drive thrugh the tunnel that goes under the motorway. Once you have driven under the tunnel you will pass a lake and after the lake you will take a right and follow that road until the next junction which is also the parking for spot 2. Once you have parked your car follow the concrete road by foot, not the gravel road leading into the forrest (next location). If you took the correct road you should be able to see a big crash gate. Walk towards that gate and take a left and follow the fence all the way up the the spot on top off the hill.To get there by public transport you are gonna have take buss 611 or 612 to Snåkered and then follow the same path shown on the map but it’s a long walk. |
| WHAT | Best for 21 line-ups and arrivals. 03 departures are already too high. |
| TIME | Best light from afternoon until sunset, especially in the summer. During winter the sun doesn’t really turn on this side. |
| MISC. | You are in the middle of nowhere so be prepared. No ladder needed as the position is elevated. |
| FOCAL LENGTH | A320/B737=150mm |
| Spot #3 – Forrest – All movements | |
|---|---|
| WHERE | Use the same direction as above but from the junction continue on the gravel road through the forrest road. Keep walking towards the airport until you reach the fence and then take a right and keep walking until you find some rocks around 5 meters from the fence. Those are good to stand on and offering an elevated position to clear the fence. You can also drive directly to the spot but it’s difficult to drive since there is a lot of big stones.
To get there by public transport you are gonna have take buss 611 or 612 to Snåkered and then follow the same path shown on the map but it’s a long walk. |
| WHAT | Location is in the middle of the runway so all movements can be photographed. |
| TIME | Best light from afternoon until sunset, especially in the summer. During winter the sun doesn’t really turn on this side. |
| MISC. | You are in the middle of nowhere so be prepared. No ladder needed as the position is elevated. |

| Spot #4 – Eskilsbyvägen – 03 Arivials | |
|---|---|
| WHERE | If you are coming from the north, drive south on Eskilsbyvägen. Stay on the main road and continue straight. After a few minutes you will pass the 03 approach path. Get rid of the car by the roadside at the next junction as marked on the map. From there walk northwards through the line of trees as marked on the map (there isn’t a path) until you come to a forrest clearing with big stones . The walk to the spotting location could sometimes be hard especially in harsh weather because of the terrain. If you are unsure how to get up there you could photograph on Eskilsbyvägen where you have parked.
By public transport you can reach this place via Bus line 620, exit Mossen. |
| WHAT | Arrivals on runway 03 only. Planes are still high so it’s not the best angle. |
| TIME | Best light from sunrise till noon all year long. Especially in the mid summer you can spot here several hours. Backlit from noon until sunset all year long. |
| MISC. | You are in the middle of nowhere so be prepared. Never go on the emergency roads that leads up to the airport. |
| FOCAL LENGTH | A320/B737 = 185mm |
| Spot #5 – P5 parking – Ramp | |
|---|---|
| WHERE | The spot is located int the long-term parking area, close to the fence. From the terminal, follow the signs towards the long-term parking P5 Långtid by foot. Walk along Flygplatsvägen and continue towards Retorpsvägen. Continue along the road next to the parking area until you reach the fence near the stands. It is generally easier to visit without a car, as parking near the airport can be expensive and there are no free parking options close to the spotting location. To get there by public transport take a bus to Göteborg Landvetter Airport Terminal (for example an airport bus from Gothenburg city centre). |
| WHAT | From this location you will see aircrafts parked at the aircrafts long term parking place, you will also see planes parked on stand 23. |
